Im Sommer letzten Jahres hat die japanische Trancecore-Band CROSSFAITH ihr nunmehr fünftes Studioalbum „EX_MACHINA“ veröffentlicht und ist damit auch schon gut rum gekommen – nach einer EU und UK Tour folgte eine Tour durch Japan im letzten Jahr. Erst vor kurzem spielte die Band einige Shows in Korea, China und Taiwan. Mit der „EX_MACHINA CLIMAX“ One Man Tour stehen jetzt direkt nochmal fünf Dates in Japan an. Auf Grund der Nachfrage und Popularität von CROSSFAITH in Deutschland habe ich mir kurz nach der Ankündigung vorgenommen, eines der Konzerte für SILENCE zu reviewen. Und siehe da: es hat geklappt! 

Bevor ich mehr verrate, habe ich eine schockierende Wahrheit für euch: Ich habe CROSSFAITH vorher noch nie live gesehen. Und um ganz ehrlich zu sein, ich kenne gerade mal drei oder vier Songs der Band. Schockierend ist das, weil ich hier in Japan üblicherweise die Ausländerin bin, die zu außerhalb Japans unbekannten Bands wie ELLEGARDEN mitgröhlt und Wort für Wort die Opening Songs von 90er Jahre Gundam Anime mitsingen kann. Allerdings ist das eine andere Geschichte und meinen Gesang möchte wahrlich niemand freiwillig hören, im Gegensatz zu CROSSFAITH. Daher habe ich keine Kosten und Mühen gescheut und mich auf den Weg nach Osaka gemacht, um den „EX_MACHINA CLIMAX“ Tourauftakt in der Heimatstadt der Band zu erleben. 

Lost in Osaka

Mein katastrophaler Orientierungssinn ist mittlerweile kein Geheimnis mehr. Obwohl ich dem ZEPP Osaka Bayside im vergangenen Dezember schon mal einen Besuch abgestattet habe (ihr dürft jetzt alle raten, welche Band ich gesehen habe), gleicht meine Anreise zur Venue einer Odyssee. Kurz vor der Angst komme ich völlig abgehetzt an, hole meinen Pass ab und suche meinen Platz auf der zweiten Etage der Halle.

Mittlerweile sind es nur noch wenige Minuten bis zum Konzertbeginn. Noch ist die Bühne ist hinter einem Vorhang verborgen – die Spannung steigt! Die Aussicht von hier oben ist eindrucksvoll, die untere Etage ist prall gefüllt und wartet ungeduldig. Endlich gehen die Lichter aus und der Vorhang fällt – buchstäblich. Zum Vorschein kommt eine beeindruckende Bühnenkonstruktion mit riesiger Leinwand im Hintergrund.

Auf eben dieser wird eine kurze, animierte Introsequenz abgespielt und eine mechanisch klingende Frauenstimme leitet das Konzert ein.

Einen Moment später stürmen CROSSFAITH zu harten Technobeats die Bühne. Frontman Kenta Koie schwingt dazu charakteristisch eine vom Bandlogo gezierte Flagge. Während ich mich frage, ob so ein sehr imposanter Rave aussieht, rastet das Erdgeschoss schon beim Intro aus. Als CROSSFAITH dann selbst die Instrumente in die Hand nehmen, um der Mischung härtere Klänge hinzuzufügen, fängt nicht nur das Publikum unter mir an zu springen.

Auch hier oben hält es die Wenigsten auf ihren Sitzen. Zu den Songs des neuen Albums „Ex_Machina“ wird selbstverständlich auch ordentlich geheadbangt. Der Herr hinter mir demonstriert das mit seiner langen Metal-Mähne in Perfektion … leider klatschen seine ausgesprochen langen Haare dabei regelmäßig an meine Stirn. Aua. 

Während dieser Performance wurden keine Mikrofonständer verletzt

Auch auf der Bühne geht es etwas gröber zu und Mikrofonständer werden umgetreten oder fliegen. Die Bühnenpräsenz der Band ist vom ersten Song markant und sehr energetisch. Bassist Hiro trägt seinen Bass teils locker über die Schulter und fegt kurz darauf wieder über die Bühne. Oder man richtet seinen Blick auf Teru, der öfter mal hinter seinem Pult aus Keyboards und Synthesizern hervorkommt, um dem Publikum ganz nahe zu kommen. Zwischendurch stürmt er sogar mit einer Keytar auf die Bühne. 

Am anderen Ende der Bühne wirbelt Gitarrist Kazuki herum und animiert das Publikum. Definitiv eine imposante Show. Stichwort imposant: Zwischenzeitlich verlassen Teile der Band die Bühne und nur Drummer Tatsu verbleibt. Was eingefleischte Fans wissen, ist für mich eine Überraschung: das Drumsolo. In meinen Augen ziemlich beeindruckend, was er da abliefert – eine Reihe an Tricks mit den Drumsticks, zwischendurch mal einen Schluck Bier genommen und das ganze mit einem äußerst breiten Grinsen. Die Fans feiern ihn dafür gebührend. Nach diesem unterhaltsamen Interlude stehen CROSSFAITH wieder vollzählig auf der Bühne. 

Auf die einleitenden Songs von „Ex_Machina“ folgen jetzt einige Klassiker der Band, stets untermalt von

stimmigen Animationen. Manchmal weiß ich nicht, worauf ich achten soll, weil so viel gleichzeitig passiert. Natürlich haben CROSSFAITH sich noch mehr einfallen lassen und liefern zu einigen Songs noch einen Remix ab. So verwandelt sich ein Metal-Konzert temporär wieder in einen Rave, definitiv abwechslungsreich! Um die Party weiter anzuheizen, wird auf der Bühne sogar angestoßen. Dazu sage ich nur: „Kanpai!“

Unter mir und um mich herum springt und headbangt das Publikum reichlich, bis der Ton des Konzerts für zwei Songs, nämlich „Milestone“ und „Lost In You“, dann verhältnismäßig ruhig wird. Erneut untermalt von stimmigen Montagen, die jetzt einen Blick auf die Tourerinnerungen der Band gewähren. Der junge Mann rechts neben mir, der bis eben noch wild gesprungen ist, blickt jetzt wie gebannt auf die Leinwand. Das Mädchen links von mir steht plötzlich auf und vergräbt ihr Gesicht in den Händen. Zum Ende des Songs höre ich ein Schluchzen und merke, dass die Performance sie zu Tränen gerührt hat. 

Barrikaden? Pff, welche Barrikaden?

Einen so intensiven Moment hätte ich nicht erwartet. Obwohl ich weder Song noch die Band besonders gut kenne, bin auch ich sehr gerührt von dieser Kombination aus Musik und Videomaterial. Nach diesem emotionalen Intermezzo wechseln sowohl CROSSFAITH und die Crowd zurück in den Party-Modus. Und meine Sitznachbarn hüpfen jetzt gemeinsam. Das Finale gestaltet sich als bunter Mix aus alten und neuen Songs, bei denen selbstverständlich die Interaktion mit dem Publikum nicht zu kurz kommt.

Teru heizt dem Publikum hinter und vor seinem mit Technik belandenen Pult ordentlich ein, wodurch vor allem auf der unteren Ebene die Stimmung kocht. Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, sind im ZEPP Osaka Bayside einige Barrikaden verteilt, die moshen und crowdsurfen deutlich erschweren. Kein Hindernis für eine CROSSFAITH-Crowd! Es wird trotzdem das Beste aus der Situation gemacht und nicht wenige crowdsurfen trotz der erschwerten Umstände – schließlich wartet ein Fist Bump mit Frontman Kenta am Ende des, ähm, „Weges“. 

Sagte ich eben Finale? Fast! Nach knapp 80 Minuten verlässt die Band die Bühne. Nach einem Abspann der die Namen aller Beteiligten an dieser wirklich imposanten Produktion zeigt, folgt

eine erneute Animation, die der am Anfang ähnelt. Selbstverständlich gibt es mit „Countdown To Hell“ und „Monolith“ noch eine Zugabe! Ein letztes Mal bebt die Venue dank der ausrastenden Meute, welche CROSSFAITH gebührend feiert.

Auf der Bühne herrscht pure Reizüberflutung, sodass es schwierig ist, das Geschehene entsprechend zu rekonstruieren. Entsprechend schnell vergeht die Zugabe und 90 Minuten Konzert sind vorbei. Wow, das war ein wilder Ritt. Ein letztes Mal ertönt der Bandname in Chor-ähnlichen Rufen aus dem sichtlich erschöpften Publikum, bevor die Halle sich langsam zu leeren beginnt. 

Fazit

„Wilder Ritt“ ist wohl die Beschreibung, die am Besten zu einem CROSSFAITH-Konzert passt. Ich muss zugeben, dass ich mich häufig dabei ertappe, wie schnell mir auf Konzerten langweilig wird, wenn ich nicht fotografiere. Aber heute war das definitiv nicht der Fall. Im Gegenteil, 90 Minuten sind vermutlich noch nie so schnell an mir vorbeigeflogen. Hier hat wirklich alles gestimmt: Der imposante Bühnenaufbau, der Sound, die atmosphärischen Animationen, die dem Konzert eine ganz besondere Atmosphäre verliehen haben und selbstverständlich die Band.

Auch die Setlist war mit einem Mix aus alten und neuen Songs perfekt abgestimmt. Mich haben CROSSFAITH auf ganzer Linie überzeugt und sollte ich die Chance haben, würde ich definitiv wieder auf eine Show der Band gehen. Wer bisher noch skeptisch war, dem empfehle ich dringend einfach Nägel mit Köpfen zu machen und sich die Band einmal anzuschauen, es lohnt sich. Egal, ob eine kleine oder große Bühne, CROSSFAITH können überall abreißen.

CROSSFAITH live in Osaka – Welcome to the “Metal-Rave”

In summer 2018 the Japanese Trancecore band CROSSFAITH released their 5^th record “EX_MACHINE” and went on an extensive tour across Europe and the UK, followed by a Japan Tour. Just recently the band played a bunch of shows in Korea, China and Taiwan. With the “EX_MACHINA CLIMAX” One Man Tour CROSSFAITH are going back on tour again for five more dates across Japan! Due to the high demand and the popularity that CROSSFAITH have gained in Germany over the years, I really wanted to review one of their shows for SILENCE. Therefore, I’m taking you on a little trip this time.

Before I’m going to tell you more, I have to reveal a shocking truth: I’ve never seen CROSSFAITH live. And to be really honest, I maybe know three or four songs of them. This is shocking since I’m usually the one foreigner that’s shouting along to ELLEGARDEN and can sing every single word of every 90’s Gundam anime. But that’s a different story and no one ever wants to hear me sing, in marked contrast to CROSSFAITH. So I spared neither trouble nor expense to get all the way to their hometown Osaka, to experience the 1^st show of the tour.

Lost in Osaka

My terrible sense of direction is no secret anymore. Even though I’ve been to ZEPP Osaka Bayside in last December (now it’s your part to

guess which band I saw back then), it’s quite and odyssey to get to the venue today. I arrive only a few minutes before the show starts, get my pass and find my seat on the 2^nd floor. The view from here is impressive as I have a look around the crowded venue and all the waiting people. The stage is hidden behind a curtain and it’s only a few moments before the show starts. Suddenly the lights turn black and the curtain falls to reveal an imposing décor, including a huge screen.

An animated intro sequence starts playing and a mechanic, female voice starts to speak in Japanese. A few seconds later CROSSFAITH hit the stage, accompanied by some intense techno sound. Frontman Kenta Koie is characteristically waving a red flag crested with the logo of CROSSFAITH. While I ask myself if this is what a very impressive rave looks like, the main floor is already going crazy.

As soon as CROSSFAITH start playing and add some heavier tunes to their unique musical mixture, the crowd beneath me starts to jump. It’s also difficult for the people around me to remain on their seats, so they start dancing and headbanging to the songs of “EX_MACHINA”. Especially the guy behind me knows how to headband in perfection, and he has the perfect hair for it – mainly because it keeps slapping again my forehead. Ouch.

No mic stands were harmed during this performance

There’s a lot of on-stage action going on as well: Some mic stands get kicked over or fly around, for example. From the first song on, the stage presence of the band is striking and very energetic. Bassist Hiro, who’s carrying around his bass effortlessly on his shoulder, sweeps across the stage only seconds later. Or Teru, who often climbs over his console full of keyboards and synthesizers to get close to the crowd. At one point he even gets out the Keytar.

At the other end of the stage there’s guitarist Kazuki jumping around and firing up the crowd. Definitely an imposing show. Speaking of imposing: For a moment everybody leaves the stage, besides drummer Tatsu. Fans may already know what’s coming now, for me it’s a pleasant surprise: The drum solo! To spice his solo up, Tatsu adds a bunch of tricks with his drumsticks, takes a sip of beer and does all this with the brightest smile possible. The audience is cheering! After this very entertaining interlude the rest of the band enters the stage again.

After some songs from “EX_MACHINA” it’s time for some CROSSFAITH classics. Throughout the concert every song is accentuated with fitting and atmospheric animations. Sometimes I really don’t know where I should look at because so much is happening. That’s not it, for some songs they even play remixes and temporarily turn the show into a rave again! This evening is indeed rich in variety. To emphasize the party-like atmosphere the band chinks some glasses on stage – I say “Kanpai”!

The crowd beneath and around me continues headbanging and jumping around, until the tone of the concert shifts for two songs, „Milestone“ and „Lost In You“. For a moment it’s getting relatively quiet. The animations shift to a collection of tour memories and serve as a little throwback to the history of the band. Also, the guy next who was jumping wildly a few minutes ago is now starring at the screen in fascination. The girl on the left side suddenly stood up. Now she’s hiding her face behind her hands. As soon as the song finishes, I can hear her sobbing, obviously touched by the performance.

Barricades? Pfft, which barricades?

I didn’t expect such an intense moment. Although I barely know the band and their music, I must admit that they also touched me with this special combination of music and video. After this emotional intermezzo CROSSFAITH as well as the crowd change back into party mode. And my seatmates are jumping together now. The final is a mixture of old and new songs and a lot of crowd interaction. Teru is firing up the crowd again and is always up for a little bit of stage diving.

The atmosphere is intense, especially on the main floor. If I remember correctly, there must be a bunch of barricades on the main floor of ZEPP Osaka Bayside, which make crowd surfing and moshing quite difficult. But this shall be no problem for a CROSSFAITH crowd!  Plenty of people are moshing anyway and a few even try to crowdsurf to earn a fist bump of frontman Kenta at the end of the, erm, “road”.

Did I just say final? Well, nearly! After about 80 Minutes the band leaves the stage. The screen shows credits with the names of all the people who made this impressive production possible. Followed by another animation that is similar to the one from the beginning. Of course, CROSSFAITH won’t leave without an encore: „Countdown to Hell“ and „Monolith“. One last time the venue is shaking, thanks to the insane crowd partying to the music they love. The performance of CROSSFAITH is a total sensory overload and I still don’t know the words to recreate what’s happening on stage. These last minutes are just passing by and the band is saying the last good bye for tonight. Wow, that was a wild ride. The audience is chanting “CROSSFAITH!” a last time before everybody slowly begins to leave.

Upshot

„Wild ride“ is probably the most adequate description I can give for a CROSSFAITH concert. I have to admit that I often get easily bored at concerts when I’m not taking photos. But as you already can tell, today that was definitely not the case. If anything, 90 minutes never flew by so fast. Tonight, everything was absolutely coherent: The imposing décor, the sound, the atmospheric cinematics and of course, the band.

Not to forget about the energetic and intense atmosphere and crowd, as well as the perfect setlist which was a mixture of old and new songs. I wasn’t sure what to expect from tonight and everything was just a big surprise. My personal upshot on this evening: CROSSFAITH absolutely killed it. If I should get the chance, I’d go to see another show. I’m sure there are a ton of other people who haven’t seen them live yet. But let me tell you one thing: If you get a chance, get a ticket and go – it’s absolutely worth it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a big or a small stage, CROSSFAITH would kill it anywhere.
