KINGDOMS: Home of the Blood Tour 2019 – Vorletzter Stop in Tokio

Shinjuku, Tokio – Heimat des wohl kompliziertesten, irreführendsten Bahnhofs der Welt. Hat man sich erfolgreich durch die Menschenmengen gekämpft und irgendwann irgendeinen Ausgang gefunden, verliert man sich in einem von blinkenden Lichtern belebtem Großstadtdschungel. Dieser beherbergt einige wirklich gute Konzertlocations, die ich regelmäßig besuche. Heute verschlägt es mich ins ANTIKNOCK – eine Premiere für mich, denn in diesem Club war ich bisher noch nie. HER NAME IN BLOOD haben geladen und ich freue mich, die Jungs endlich als Headliner zu sehen. Zwei Mal durfte ich sie bereits als Support sehen bzw. fotografieren und „Abriss“ war jedes Mal die zutreffendste Beschreibung für ihre Auftritte. Für ihre KINGDOMS: Home of the Blood Tour hat sich die Band auch ein besonderes Konzept ausgedacht, welches ich persönlich wirklich großartig finde. Fünf Member, fünf Shows – jeweils eine in der Heimat des jeweiligen Bandmitgliedes. Auf jedem Konzert gibt es exklusives Merch und eine individuelle Setlist. Heute ist Sänger Ikepy dran und ich bin sehr gespannt auf die eingeladene Support-Band als auch die handverlesene Setlist. 

Vielversprechender Auftakt

Als heutiger Support stehen THE LAST NOVEMBER aus Tokyo auf dem Programm. Bei dem Namen klingelt es bei mir – und tatsächlich habe ich die Jungs vor einigen Wochen zufällig schon einmal live gesehen. Schon bei dieser Show hat die Band einen guten Eindruck hinterlassen und ich bin gespannt auf ihr heutiges Set. Einige Minuten vor Beginn des Auftritts ist das ANTIKNOCK bereits ordentlich gefüllt. Ein paar Mädels, gekleidet in THE LAST NOVEMBER Merchandise, schleichen sich noch an mir vorbei um sich bessere Plätze zu sichern. Nur einen Augenblick später geht das Licht aus und der Opening Act wird unter Applaus vom Publikum empfangen. Es wird nicht lange gezögert, ein kurzes „Guten Abend, Shinjuku“ und die Jungs hauen direkt in die Saiten. Meine Erinnerung trübt mich nicht und THE LAST NOVEMBER heizen das Publikum ordentlich an. Von meinem sicheren Platz in den hinteren Reihen lässt sich sogar der ein oder andere Moshpit erkennen.

Kein Wunder, denn der Sound der Jungs lädt förmlich zum moshen ein. Kurze Verschnaufpausen gibt es während der MCs der Band, die ich – wie immer – nur bedingt verstehe. Danach geht es direkt mit geballten Klängen weiter. Stellenweise erinnert mich die Musik von THE LAST NOVEMBER  an CRYSTAL LAKE und Songs aus der „Hollow Bodies“-Ära von BLESSTHEFALL. Definitiv gute Einflüsse, die auch das Publikum deutlich in Fahrt bringen. Dementsprechend schnell vergehen knapp 30 Minuten – ein wirklich vielversprechendes Aufwärmprogramm. Die in Merch gekleideten Mädels schleichen erneut an mir vorbei. Allem Anschein nach ist es in den vorderen Reihen actionreich zugegangen. Jetzt ist also der perfekte Zeitpunkt für ein kühles Bier in der anstehenden Umbaupause, bevor es zurück in den Pit geht. Oder, wie immer, wieder in die letzte Reihe – ihr wisst ja, ich und die Konzertverletzungen… 

Volle Power: HER NAME IN BLOOD

Mein Bier ist alle – schlecht. Die Trauer um meinen Hopfensmoothie ist allerdings schnell verflogen, denn HER NAME IN BLOOD werden vom jubelnden Publikum empfangen. In bester HER NAME IN BLOOD Manier wird auch direkt mit voller Power in die handverlesene Setlist eingestiegen. Mit dem ersten Song„Here We Come“ wird’s in den vorderen Reihen direkt wieder ziemlich heiß.  Während „HALO“ und „KATANA“ ist es auch wieder an der Zeit, den Moshpit zu eröffnen. Auch in den sicheren, hinteren Reihen herrscht rege Bewegung: Hinter mir steht eine Bank, welche direkt von ein paar Mädels ausgenutzt wurde, um eine gute Aussicht zu erhaschen. Nach den ersten drei Songs folgt dann auch der erste von einigen MCs. Ich mutmaße, dass das Publikum jetzt erstmal ausgiebig begrüßt wird. Da ich ansonsten nur einige Wortfetzen verstehe, kann ich leider keine ausgiebigere Übersetzung bereitstellen. Aber was soll’s, es geht ja um die Musik – und damit geht’s auch direkt weiter.

„Hey Do You Notice That You Are Already Dead?“ steht auf Ikepys Setlist. Ein Song, an den ich mich absolut nicht erinnern kann, die Crowd aber scheinbar schon, denn die feiert ordentlich. Zwischendrin muss ich einwerfen, dass das ANTIKNOCK eine großartige Wahl für dieses Konzert ist. Wie in fast allen Clubs die ich bisher besucht habe ist die Akustik sehr gut, aber gerade die überschaubare Größe der Venue trägt zur angenehmen Hometown-Show Atmosphäre bei, weshalb das Ganze intim und irgendwie heimisch wirkt. Mit „Bleed On“, „Redemption“ und „Revolver“ nimmt die Pit-Party weiter Fahrt auf. Auch die Bank-Mädels hinter mir haben reichlich Spaß, mittlerweile springen sie nämlich munter auf und ab. Kinners, fallt da bloß nicht runter… 

Mit „Bakemono“ gibt es endgültig kein Halten mehr. Wenn meine Augen mich nicht täuschen, wird hier und da auch versucht zu crowdsurfen. Seitens der Band ist viel Interaktion mit dem Publikum geboten, vor allem Gitarrist Daiki klettert immer wieder in Richtung Crowd. Die folgenden Songs „White Lies“, „Identical“ und „Unshaken Fire“ sind beim Stichwort Publikumsnähe keine Ausnahme und die konstanten Interaktionen tragen zur Atmosphäre des Abends bei. Apropos Interaktion, auch die Chemie zwischen den Membern stimmt. Zwischen den Songs wird gescherzt und gelacht – zumindest entnehmen ich den Reaktionen der Zuschauer, dass die Unterhaltungen der Jungs recht lustig sind. Auch während der Songs wird miteinander interagiert und die Songs nicht einfach heruntergespielt – das nenne ich Spielfreude. Dass ich diesen Punkt so betone liegt daran, dass ich (leider) schon oft anderes gesehen habe – Konzerte, die völlig routiniert nach Schema F gespielt werden und schlichtweg langweilig sind. Langeweile kommt bei HER NAME IN BLOOD aber nicht eine Sekunde lang auf, im Gegenteil, diese Show macht wirklich Spaß.

Langsam aber sicher bewegt sich der Abend auf seinen Höhepunkt zu. Während „Last Day“ und „Forsaken“ bebt das ANTIKNOCK schon von der ersten bis zur letzten Reihe. Mit „Gasolines“ bildet das Finale dieser besonderen Setlist, ebenfalls ein Song, den ich eine Weile nicht gehört habe. Alles springt und tobt, was in der recht kleinen Venue ein wirklich eindrucksvolles Bild darstellt.  Natürlich fehlen die charakteristischen HER NAME IN BLOOD-Moves auch heute nicht, wie Ikepy, der Gitarrist Daiki locker auf dem Arm trägt. Unter Jubel verabschiedet sich die Band von der Bühne, aber war es das wirklich schon? Selbstverständlich nicht, das Publikum verlangt „One more song!“, auf geht’s zurück auf die Bühne. Neben Ikepy, Daiki, Makoto, Maki und TJ steht jetzt auch Yuske, Frontman von THE LAST NOVEMBER mit auf der Bühne, welcher die Band beim Song „Zero“ unterstützt. Anstatt des verlangtem „one more song“ gibt es sogar „two more songs“. „Decadence“ ist das heutige grande finale und der Club bebt ein letztes Mal. Zum Abschied präsentieren HER NAME IN BLOOD wie immer Katakana, die mit Tape auf Gitarren und Bass geklebt wurden. Nach knapp 90 Minuten Set ist jetzt aber wirklich Schluss! 

Während einige Leute an mir vorbei Richtung Bar strömen, höre ich öfter „Sugoi!“, was soviel wie großartig bedeutet. Eine sehr treffende Beschreibung. Wenn ich mir die verschwitzten Gesichter angucke, scheint es in den vorderen Reihen ziemlich wild zugegangen zu sein. Denke ich an die „Bank-Mädels“ hinter mir wird mir allerdings klar, dass es bei diesem Auftritt fast unmöglich war, still stehen zu bleiben. So soll es sein! Während ein Großteil des Publikums den Club nach und nach verlässt, harren einige Fans noch aus um mit der Band zu plaudern. Trotz anstehenden Abbaus nehmen die Jungs sich Zeit für ihre Fans – und das in einer Zeit von überteuerten VIP Upgrades. In meinen Augen eine wirklich tolle Geste und für die wartenden Fans wohl der krönende Abschluss.

Fazit

Für mich geht es jetzt zurück zur Shinjuku Station und während ich mich wie immer im Bahnhof verlaufe, lasse ich den Abend noch einmal Revue passieren. Dass mein Fazit sehr positiv ausfällt, lässt sich nach dem Review sicher schon erahnen. Es war ein rundum gelungenes Konzert: abwechslungsreiche, einzigartige Setlist, tolle Location die vor allem zum Konzept der Tour passte und sehr gute Stimmung, nicht nur beim Headliner.

KINGDOMS: Home of the Blood Tour 2019 – Next-to-last stop: Tokyo

Shinjuku, Tokyo – Home of the most confusing train station in the entire world, at least if you ask me. Once you have managed to get trough tons of people, you may eventually find an exit only to get lost in the concrete jungle, full of flashing lights. This concrete jungle is home to some pretty neat concert venues that I visit every now and then. Today, I’m going to visit the ANTIKNOCK for the very first time. After seeing and shooting HER NAME IN BLOOD as support act, I’m stoked to finally see the guys as a headliner. Especially since their previous shows have always been good. For their KINGDOMS: Home of the Blood Tour, the band came up with a quite unique concept, which I personally like a lot. They play five shows, one in the home prefecture of each of the five member. Every show has a special setlist and special merchandise that is sold at that show exclusively. Today’s show is the hometown show of vocalist Ikepy and I’m looking forward to the setlist he created. 

A Promising Start

Tonight’s support act is THE LAST NOVEMBER from Tokyo. There rings a bell… I saw these guys live a few weeks ago. Since they’ve left a pretty good impression, I’m curious for their set tonight. It’s getting crowded inside the ANTIKNOCK as I spot a few girls wearing merchandise of THE LAST NOVEMBER. They’re sneaking past me, trying to get to the front to have a better view. Only a few seconds later, the lights turn black and the cheering audience welcomes THE LAST NOVEMBER. They don’t need many words and go from zero to sixty in an instant. Seems like my memory didn’t lie to me, THE LAST NOVEMBER get the audience going. From my safe spot in the back, I can even see a small moshpit. 

That’s not surprising since the sound of the band really invites people to mosh. The MCs, which I don’t understand as usual, give the audience some small breaks before the band dives back into some heavy tunes. Their music partly reminds me of CRYSTAL LAKE or the „Hollow Bodies“ era of BLESSTHEFALL. Some darn good influences if you ask me. The 30-minute-long set really flies by, what an intense warm-up! The merch wearing girls I’ve seen earlier are sneaking past me again. From looking at them I can tell the it must’ve been pretty intense in the front. It’s time for the usual set change on stage, which means it’s also time to grab a beer and to find a new safe spot even farther in the back. You know, me and getting injured at concerts…

Full Power: HER NAME IN BLOOD

My beer’s gone. Damn. But the grieve for the hop-smoothie doesn’t last long because HER NAME IN BLOOD are hitting the stage and the audience is cheering. In typical HER NAME IN BLOOD manner, they start off with full power right away. The first song of the handpicked setlist is „Here We Come“ and it’s getting intense again in the front. With „HALO“ and „KATANA“ it’s finally mosh pit time, and even the people in the back start moving. Behind me there’s a bench, some girls just climbed on it to get a better view. The first three songs are followed by the first MC of the evening. I can only pick parts of what is being said, but I assume the audience is getting greeted properly. Since I want to focus on the music, I’ll dive right into that again. 

The show continues with „Hey Do You Notice That You Are Already Dead?“, a song that I’ve actually never listened to before.

Considering the partying crowd, they’ve definitely heard that song. By the way, I really want to mention that the ANTIKNOCK turns out to be a great choice for this concert. The sound is really good, but I enjoy the rather small size of the club the most. It gives the whole show a very cozy hometown-show atmosphere and makes the whole event kind of intimate. The pit-party continues with „Bleed On“, „Redemption“ and „Revolver“ and the „bench girls“ behind me seem to enjoy the show a lot, because they started to jump. Don’t fall down there girls… 

The second the band starts playing „Bakemono“ everyone is basically losing their sh*t. If my eyes aren’t lying to me, I even see some people trying to crowdsurf. HER NAME IN BLOOD are interacting with their audience a lot as well, especially guitarist Daiki, who’s often getting really close to the crowd. „White Lies“, „Identical“ and „Unshaken Fire“ are of course no exceptions when it comes to interacting with the audience. Another big plus for the special atmosphere tonight. Speaking of interaction, I really enjoy the on-stage chemistry between the bandmembers. Not only during the songs, especially in between the songs they talk and joke a lot. At least, I assume they’re cracking jokes all the time since the audience is laughing a lot. They don’t just play the songs, they actually enjoy playing them and it is a lot of fun to watch them on stage. I’ve seen it a lot that bands seems to have kind of a routine which can make a concert pretty boring, but a HER NAME IN BLOOD concert is everything but boring. 

Slowly but surely the evening is reaching it’s climax. During „Last Day“ and „Forsaken“ the ANTIKNOCK trembles from front to

back. „Gasolines“ is the final of this very special setlist and another song that I haven’t heard in a while. Everybody is jumping and clapping along which creates quite an impressive picture in this small venue. Of course not to forget about the characteristic HER NAME IN BLOOD moves, for example singer Ikepy who effortlessly lifts guitarist Daiki. The audience is cheering after the song finishes and the band leaves the stage. Within seconds the people start screaming „one more song“ – and they shall get what they asked for. It’s time to get back on stage for Ikepy, Daiki, Makoto, Maki and TJ and additionally THE LAST NOVEMBER-frontman Yuske, who supports them during the song „Zero“. „Decadence“ is tonight’s final and the club trembles one last time. Before saying goodbye HER NAME IN BLOOD present, as usual, the back of their instruments where they put on some katakana letters with tape. After the nearly 90-minute-long set, this is really the end. 

While people are passing by on their way to the bar, I often hear the word „sugoi“ which translates to „awesome“. A very fitting description for tonight. Having a look at the sweaty faces, it must’ve been really wild in the front. Thinking about the „bench girls“ behind me, it was actually nearly impossible to just stand still during this concert. That’s how it’s suppoed to be! The majority of the audience is leaving after the show, but there are still a few people going to the front and waiting for the band. Even though the guys have to pack all their stuff, they still take time and talk to their fans. In a time of expensive VIP upgrades and super fancy special tickets that’s something I really appreciate. For the waiting fans this really must’ve been the icing on the cake. Thumbs up for HER NAME IN BLOOD for this! 

Conclusion

It’s time for me to get back to Shinjuku station and while I get lost in there as usual, I’m reviewing the evening again in my head. I assume this article reveals that my conclusion is going to be very positive. It was a completely succesful concert: a unique and varied setlist, a great location which perfectly fits the concept of this tour.
