Der Eine oder Andere mag sich vielleicht noch an meine Review zu „s p a c e [s]“, dem neusten Album von SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET erinnern. Oder an das Interview mit CRYSTAL LAKE vergangenen Sommer, bei dem der Name SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET auch schon gefallen ist. Nachdem ich die Band aus Tokio vergangenen Herbst dann zufällig als Support von AS IT IS und SET IT OFF gesehen habe, hat es mich zugegeben schon ziemlich aus den DocMartens gehauen. Schon damals juckte es mir in den Fingern, einen Artikel über die starke Live Performance der Band zu schreiben . Dies habe ich mir jetzt allerdings für einen ganz besonderen Anlass aufgehoben:   Das Tourfinale der „s p a c e [s]“-Release Tour steht an und ich bringe euch ein Live Review mit, dass es in sich hat! Zusätzlich gibt’s eine Premiere bei SILENCE: Auf Grund der weltweit wachsenden Fangemeinde der Band erscheint dieser Artikel auf Deutsch und Englisch. 

Some people may remember the interview with CRYSTAL LAKE that SILENCE has published last summer. I had asked the band if there was a particular Japanese band they could recommend to our audience. The answer was: SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET.  I already saw SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET last fall when they were opening up for AS IT IS and SET IT OFF in Tokyo. And in all honesty, their performance back then pretty much blew my mind. My fingers were itching to write a live report about the band, but I have saved this for a special occasion. Finally, the day has come: It is the tour final of the „s p a c e [s]“-release tour and I am serving you a very special live report! This will also be the premiere of the first bilingual article in SILENCE Magazine to share my experience from Japan with SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET fans around the world. Please find the English version below the German text. 

Ein Ausflug nach Akasaka

Was ist eine adäquate Beschäftigung an einem trüben Sonntag? Genau, ein Konzert! Aber nicht irgendein Konzert, sondern das ausverkaufte Tourfinale von SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET. Dafür breche ich mit einer lieben Freundin in die mir noch unbekannte Nachbarschaft Akasaka auf. Meine Kamera, die mich sonst stets treu begleitet, bleibt heute übrigens leider daheim. Auf dem Weg zur Location, dem 1300 Leute tragenden BLITZ Akasaka, begegnen uns schon einige Leute, die dem Merch nach zu urteilen dasselbe Ziel haben wie wir. Nach einem kleinen Umweg haben wir es dann auch endlich geschafft – wie viele andere auch. Schon deutlich vor Einlass ist schon einiges los. Vor der Venue wird fleißig fotografiert, dort wurde nämlich ein Aufsteller mit einem Foto der Band platziert. Eine schöne Geste für Fans. Pünktlich um 17:00 Uhr beginnt der Einlass – hier trennen sich auch erstmal die Wege von meiner Begleitung und mir, denn da ich im Namen von SILENCE auf dem Konzert bin, darf ich mir das Spektakel vom Rang aus ansehen. Allerdings dauert es bis dahin noch knapp eine Stunde. Schließlich muss die ausverkaufte Halle erst gefüllt werden. 

Licht aus, Bühne frei!

Plötzlich: Licht aus, der Saal wird in Schwarz gehüllt. Einzelne Spotlights strahlen auf bestimmte Positionen der Bühne, dazu ertönt das Intro „s p a c e [s]“, welches schon auf dem Album Stimmung aufgebaut hat. Auf der Bühne befindet sich ein Piano, welches mir schon vorher ins Auge gefallen ist. Als das Spotlight auf eben dieses Piano scheint, sitzt dort Sänger Yosh und spielt das Intro. Kurz darauf stürmt der Rest der Band wahrlich die Bühne. Eindrucksvoller Anfang: Check. SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET fackeln nicht lange und geben mit „T R A N S l a t e d“ direkt einen Song der Marke „ins Gesicht“ zum Besten. Das Publikum ist sofort wach und schon während der ersten Minuten formt sich ein Moshpit. Auch einige Crowdsurfer machen sich auf den Weg zur Bühne. Selbiges Bild bietet sich beim folgenden Song „Fool’s Gold“, der ebenfalls zu den härteren Tracks der Band gehört. Schon jetzt ist die enorme Energie der Band erkennbar – eine Bühnenpräsenz, welche die Zuschauer förmlich in ihren Bann – und zur Bühne – zieht. Mein persönliches Highlight sind nach wie vor die kraftvollen Screams von Bassist Yudai. Hört euch die Songs an, dann wisst ihr, was ich meine. 

Zeit für eine kleine Pit-Pause, jetzt ist Zeit für Party! „HI I LO“ und „The Happy Song“, die Garanten für gute Laune schlechthin. Nicht nur die Jungs auf der Bühne haben Spaß, interagieren fast konstant miteinander. Auch das Publikum springt, tanzt und feiert die Band quasi noch in den ersten Minuten der Show. 

Wenn ich nur mehr Japanisch könnte…

… dann könnte ich euch hier wissen lassen, worum es in dem ersten MC des Abends ging. Also, den kleinen Reden der Band, die zwischen den Songs eingeplant sind. Den Reaktionen des Publikums zufolge ist es aber unterhaltsam. Dann eben direkt wieder weiter zum musikalischen Teil! Der nächste Song auf der Setlist ist „Substraction“ von der „Course of Action“ EP. Wow, wann habe ich den Song zuletzt gehört? Das spricht auf jeden Fall für eine gut gemischte Setlist! Und für den Stimmumfang von Yosh, der mich immer wieder beeindruckt. Es geht weiter mit einer Mischung aus alten und neuen Songs: „Right and Left“ ist unheimlich catchy, selbst oben auf dem Rang tobt das Publikum. Ganz zu Schweigen von der Crowd im Saal. „Tierra“ ist einmal die Ruhe vor dem MC und vor dem Sturm, denn danach steht „found & lost“ auf dem Plan. Das Synonym für Abriss, denn nach der kleinen Verschnaufpause ist es wieder Zeit für crowdsurfing! Wer nicht gerade crowdsurft, gröhlt die Lyrics des Englisch-Japanischen Songs mit – das ist gefühlt der Rest der Halle. Wenn Yosh, genau wie der Rest der Band, nicht wild über die Bühne wirbelt, erwartet er die Crowdsurfer für einem kleinen Fistbump. Demtentsprechend viele machen sich also auf Richtung Bühne, zum Glück ist dafür auch während der nächsten beiden Songs „Bandaid“ und „Let It Die“ Zeit. Da möchte ich fast selbst in den Pit springen. 

Zunächst geht es weiter mit „s p a c e [s]“, welcher erneut als Insert der Atmosphäre dient, zusätzlich untermalt von der äußerst passenden Lichtgestaltung des Konzerts. Mit „NE:ONE“ wird noch einmal Vollgas gegeben, bevor es mit dem zweiten, stellenweise ruhigeren Teil des Konzerts weitergeht. Zwischenfazit: Ich bin restlos beeindruckt. Vor allem von der Bühnenpräsenz der Band, der Interaktion der Mitglieder miteinender, wie beispielsweise die beiden Gitarristen Ivan und Tatsuya, die immer wieder munter umeinander herumtänzeln und das ganze Bühnensetup zum rennen und springen ausnutzen. Fast wie ein Spielplatz. Oder Tatsuya, der lässig seinen Fuß auf dem Bein des vor ihm knienden Yudai platziert, um einige markante Riffs zu spielen.  Und Drummer Show ist ohnehin ein Biest an seinem Instrument. 

„We are the Light, We are the Future“

Jetzt wird es allerdings ruhig im Saal. Am Piano spielt Yosh in Begleitung der Band die Ballade„Follow“. Wie gebannt lauscht das Publikum, folgt mit ausgestreckten Armen der ruhigen Melodie und singt einige Parts des Songs mit. Für einen Moment nach dem Song herrscht wieder Stille im Saal, bis Yosh diese mit den Worten „We are the light, we are the future“ unterbricht – dem Intro des Songs „Spectrum“. Selbstverständlich wiederholt das Publikum seine Worte, ein absoluter Gänsehautmoment! Auch während der folgenden Songs „S.P.I.N.E“ und „Ashes, Ashes“ geht es nahezu episch zu, denn Yosh steht im Zentrum der Bühne, schwingt eine Flagge mit dem Logo der Band. Der Satz „Der Saal tobt“ beschreibt diesen Augenblick am ehesten. SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET lassen nicht nach! Es folgt eine besondere Version von „If You Really Want To“, die für mich nach einem Mix aus Original und Akustik-Version klingt. Eine schöne Überraschung! Da sich die Akustikgitarre jetzt ohnehin auf der Bühne befindet, wird diese gleich für den Song „3 a.m.“ genutzt, der auf das MC folgte. Mit „UPLIFTED“ und „still believe“ geht es nochmal ruhiger zu. Der perfekte Moment für das Publikum den Saal mit Feuerzeugen etc. zu erhellen. 

Das Finale rückt näher

Nochmal Fahrt aufgenommen wird mit „When I“ und „Conscious“, bevor mit zweiundzwanzigsten (!) Song „Network System“ noch einmal die Hölle losbricht. Diese Gelegenheit muss vom Publikum selbstverständlich nochmal zum moshen und crowdsurfen genutzt werden. Auf der Bühne herrscht mindestens genauso viel Action. Immer wieder beeindruckend: Yudais famoser Bass-Wurf. Ich frage mich dabei, wie er es scheinbar mühelos schafft, sein Instrument zu fangen, nachdem er es gefühlt beinahe an die Decke geworfen hat. Und ob dabei schon einmal jemand zu Schaden gekommen ist. In diesem Moment bin ich fast froh, heute nicht im Fotograben zu sein, sonst wäre die Überschrift dieses Artikels „Saskia von Bass erschlagen“.  Nach diesem imposanten Finale verfinstert sich die Halle und eine Leinwand wird heruntergelassen. Es erscheint ein Abspann mit allen Bands und Namen der Leute, die an der Tour beteiligt waren. Respekt, eine tolle Geste an das ganze Team!

Selbstverständlich ist ein Tourfinale nach zweiundzwanzig Songs nicht zu Ende! Nachdem auf der Leinwand die Worte „Common Sense“ erscheinen, stürmt die Band zurück auf die Bühne. Zeit für die Premiere von zwei neuen Songs, „Heroine“ und „Bridges“, welche es wirklich in sich haben! Bevor sich die Band endgültig verabschiedet gibt es noch eine große Ankündigung: Eine weitere Tour mit satten 47 Dates in ganz Japan – wow. Das sogar relativ zeitnah zum Ende dieser Tour. Nicht nur ich, sondern auch das Publikum ist restlos begeistert. Großen Respekt an die Jungs von SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET für all das Herzblut, dass sie in ihre Musik stecken. Auch auf die Gefahr hin hier kitschig zu klingen, ich bin selten so begeistert von einem Konzert – aber die Leidenschaft der Band ist in jedem einzelnen Song und vor allem in ihrer Performance erkennbar. So auch im allerletzten Song des Abends, der Ballade „Listening“, welche das Konzert ruhig ausklingen lässt. Danach sitze ich erstmal für einen Moment sprachlos auf meinem Platz. 

Fazit

Was für ein Abend. Ganz passende Worte fallen mir immer noch nicht ein, außer, dass SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET hier soeben ein rundum gelungenes Finale hingelegt haben. Knapp über zwei Stunden Konzert, eine perfekte Setlist, absolut starke Bühnenpräsenz untermalt von einer eindrucksvollen Lichtshow. Dazu noch Sound auf höchstem Niveau. Was will man mehr? Auf dem Weg nach Draußen treffe ich einen meiner Fotografen-Freunde, der mir gegenüber seine völlige Begeisterung über das Konzert äußert. Auch meine Begleitung, die Draußen auf mich wartet, beschreibt es als „best concert I’ve ever been to“.

Wer glaubt, ich stapele hier sehr hoch, dem lege ich ans Herz SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET eine Chance zu geben – eine Band, die sich nicht auf ein Genre festlegt und nicht vor Experimenten zurückschreckt. Gerade das macht den einzigartigen Sound der Band aus, der nie langweilig wird und immer wieder aufs Neue zu überraschen weiß. Ich für meinen Teil werde mir die Jungs auf ihrer kommenden Tour auf jeden Fall noch einmal live anschauen und hoffe, SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET in der Zukunft auch in Europa wiederzusehen – idealerweise dann wieder hinter der Kamera. Wer jetzt neugierig geworden ist, dem lege ich ans Herz die folgenden Social Media Links anzuklicken und sich den Namen SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET für die Zukunft zu merken.

A Trip to Asakusa

What would be a perfect thing to do on a cloudy Sunday? Exactly, a concert! This time it is going to be a very special one: the sold out tour final of SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET. Therefore me and my friend head to a neighborhood I have not visited yet: Akasaka. My usual partner in crime, my camera, has to stay at home today. On our way to the location BLITZ Akakasa, that can fit up to 1300 people, we already see some people dressed in SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET merchandise. We obviously have the same destination. After a little detour, we finally arrive at the venue. A whole bunch of people already waits outside, takes photos with a stand-up display of the band. A pretty nice gesture for the fans! At 5:00pm sharp the doors open. It is time for me and my friend to part our ways for now, since I will be seeing the concert for SILENCE from the 2nd floor. Until then I have to wait for about an hour. Since the show is sold out, a lot of people have to get into the venue. For now, I just enjoy the impressive view on the stage. 

House Lights down, Stage Lights on

Suddenly the lights turn black. Only a single spotlight is shining on different spots on stage while the intro „s p a c e [s]“ plays, which has already been a nice and moody effect on the album. One thing has caught my attention while I was waiting: a piano that is placed on stage. In the moment the light shines on this spot singer Yosh is revealed sitting at the piano, playing the intro. A few moments later the rest of the band takes the stage by storm. Impressive start: check. SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET do not wait for anything, they kick off the show at full speed. With „T R A N S l a t e d“ they play one of their heaviest songs, or as I like to call it „in your face“. The audience is wide awake and a mosh pit opens up immediately, followed by a bunch of crowdsurfers. It goes on like that for the second song, „Fool’s Gold“, another heavy song of the band. One can see the enourmous energy and intense stage presence right at the beginning of the set. SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET manages to captivate their audience within a few minutes. One of my personal highlights during these songs are the powerful screams of bassist Yudai. Give these songs a go, then you will know what I mean. Now it is time for a little mosh pit break and a little more party! „HI I LO“ as well as „The Happy Song“ will guarantee you a good time. This party is not exclusive to the audience, which is jumping and dancing since from the first minute on. The band seems to have a lot of fun on stage, too, while they are nearly constantly interacting with each other. 

If only I could speak more Japanese…

… then I would tell you what the following MC is about. These planned, spoken inserts during the show are a great interaction with the crowd. Following their reactions, Yosh’s speech must be very entertaining. However, let’s dive right into the music again! The next song on the setlist is „Substraction“, which was released way back on the „Course of Action“ EP. Damn, it has been awhile since I heard this song. This set list is definitely a well-mixed one! „Substraction“ is a perfect example for the impressive vocal range of vocalist Yosh. The concert goes on with a mix of old and new songs: „Right and Left“, which is so catchy that it is actually hard not to jump of from your chair and dance. Even the audience on the 2nd floor is completely engaged in the show, not to mention the 1st floor. „Tierra“ is the calm before the storm since the next song on the list is „found & lost“. Or in other words: the venue is probably about to get teared down now. After this little party break it is time for some crowdsurfing again! People who are not into that are shouting along the lyrics of the biliangual song, which is pretty much the majority of the audience. If Yosh is not sweeping across the stage like a whirlwind – just as the rest of the band – he awaits the crowdsurfers for a little fistbump. That is indeed motivating for a lot of people and also why I stopped counting the people again. Fortunately, there is enough time during the next two songs „Bandaid“ and „Let It Die“ to share a little moment with the singer. Even I kind of want to jump into this pit now! 

„s p a c e [s]“ serves as an insert again and creates atmosphere, which is even more accentuated by the very fitting stagelighting of the show. With „NE:ONE“ the band is going in full speed again, before the second, a little more quiet part of the concert starts.  Interim conclusion: I am well and truly impressed. Especially with the energy and stage presence of the band, all the interactions of the guys on stage is captivating. Just a few examples: The guitarists Ivan and Tatsuya, constantly running and jumping around, using the whole stage set-up as if it is their playground.  Sometimes they even kind of dance towards each other. Or Tatsuya, who casually places his foot on Yudais leg while he is kneeling in front of Tatsuya. Of course he is impressively shredding his guitar while doing that. Also, can not forget about drummer, Show, in the back, who is an absolute beast on the drums. I assume this sums up how much fun it is to watch these guys play live. 

„We are the Light, we are the Future“

The audience falls silent. Yosh is sitting at the piano and plays the ballad „Follow“ together with the band. For a moment the crowd is under a spell, following the melody with waving arms. After the song ends everybody turns quiet again, until Yosh interrupts the silence with the words „We are the light, we are the future“ – the intro of the song „Spectrum“. The audience starts chanting and repeating his words – this is literally giving me goosebumps! During the following songs „S.P.I.N.E.“ and „Ashes, Ashes“ is getting epic! Yosh stands in the center of the stage, waving a flag with the band logo. I guess the term „the crowd is raging“ is the most fitting term for this moment. SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET just keep going with the next song, a special version of „If You Really Want To“ I have not heard before. To me it sounds like a mixture of the original and the acoustic version. What a nice surprise for this occasion! Since the acoustic guitar is already on stage anyway since it is being used for the song „3 a.m.“, which follows another MC by the band. During „UPLIFTED“ and „still believe“ it is getting quiet again. The perfect moment to take out the flashlights and light up the venue. 

The Final is getting closer

In order to prepare everone for the grand final the band plays „When I“ and „Conscious“, before they unleash hell with 22nd (!) song on the setlist, „Network System“. Of course a mosh pit opens up again immediately, and there are countless crowdsurfers. Something that never fails to impress me is the notorious moment when Yudai throws his bass in the air. During these seconds I always ask myself how long did he practise to catch it so effortless and more importantly, did he ever break his bass or hit someone? Now I am nearly happy not to be in the photo pit. If I would be down there today and considering my concert injury ratio, today’s headline would be „Saskia got slayed by a bass“. After this imposing final, the venue gets dark and a screen is being lowered down. It shows the names of all the people and bands who made this tour happen. What a grateful gesture towards the whole team! 

Since this is a tour final, 22 songs are not enough – it is time for an encore! After the words „Common Sense“ appear on the screen, the band hits the stage again. The first two songs of the encore are „Heroine“ and „Bridges“ and have never been played before. I can already tell you: they are killing it. Before the final good bye, at least for tonight, it is time for another big surprise. Another tour with 47 dates across Japan – Wow! These guys do not get tired of playing live and I am not the only one that is oviously impressed by so much passion. I stand in awe of SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET and all the blood, sweat and tears they put into their music. I may sound terribly cheesy, but once you have seen this band live you will know what I mean. Personally, I rarely see bands that put that much passion into every single song, whether it is in the studio or during a concert. Of course the very last song „Listening“ is no exception and ends the concert with a very quiet moment. The band leaves the stage, and I am left speachless. 

Conclusion

What a night! I still can not find appropriate words for what I have just seen, besides that SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET have absolutely killed it. A concert a little more than two hours, a perfect setlist, a memorable and powerful stage presence as well as a well-developed lightning design. Additionally, the sound at BLITZ Akasaka is close to perfection. Is there anything else one could wish for? On my way out I run into one of my dear photo pit-buddies who also is absolutely impressed by the whole show. Outside the venue my friend is already waiting for me with a big smile on her face. „The best concert I’ve ever been to!“ Those are the first words I hear from her.

Some people may think now that I exaggerate, but I highly recommend giving SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET a go. It is a band that does not limit itself by the boundaries of a certain genre and is not afraid of experimenting with different sounds. For me, this is what makes SURVIVE SAID THE PROPHET special. They still achieve a very characteristic sounds, never gets boring since every song is a little surprise. Since I will stay in Japan until the summer, I am very happy to catch the guys again on their upcoming tour. Considering the growing fanbase of the band, I hope I will see them in Europe soon – ideally from behind the camera.
