Welches Feedback hast du bisher so bekommen?

Was magst du uns darüber erzählen?

Dark Bombastic Evening

Flo: Welche Pläne bezüglich Auftritten in Deutschland hast du?

ENGLISH VERSION

Do you remember my article about SYLVAINE – this beautiful Norwegian girl creating this absolutely amazing music? For me, her album „Wistful“ is one of the best records released in 2016, that’s for sure. At the DARK BOMBASTIC EVENING she played her very first gig with a live band, with Neige (ALCEST) behind the drums.

I’m very thankful for the opportunity to ask her some questions. Here is the interview with SYLVAINE:

Flo: Now that your second album „Wistful“ is available for about three months: How do you feel with it? What was the feedback you got by now?

Sylvaine - "Wistful"

Sylvaine: It’s crazy to think the album has been out for over 3 months already… Time sure flies by! I think every artist will always find small things to improve in their past works, so of course, “Wistful” is no exception to me, yet I must say I am very proud of this album and what it became in the end. It perfectly captured what I was trying to convey at the time and I’m very happy with the evolution in my songwriting on this album, too. I’m so happy that people also seem to appreciate it and really couldn’t ask for better feedback than what I have gotten so far! Lots of nice reviews, features and beautiful words from audiences and music press all over the world feels quite reassuring and helps me believe that I actually created something valuable, something that could make people feel, which is all I could ever want anyway. In other words: I’m definitely very thankful and happy with the reactions of this record so far!

Flo: In comparison to your first album your second album sounds much deeper to me and more „gazy“, which is great in my opinion. Did it just happen somehow or what is the reason for that?

Sylvaine: Making the album more ethereal and dreamy was definitely something I consciously had in mind while creating the tracks for “Wistful”. Expression wise, I really wanted to make the difference between the serene elements and brutal elements even bigger on this album, something that resulted in the music on “Wistful” becoming more atmospheric than on my first album “Silent Chamber, Noisy Heart”. I really wanted the ambient vibe to be more present on this album, but at the same time keep the natural aggression that came out when I was writing some of the tracks, which also gives the music a darker and harsher side than before. Being the second album for Sylvaine, I would say “Wistful” has gotten me even closer to the sound I originally had in mind for the project when I first started it. Where the first album was a bit more of a patchwork, due to the songs being written over many different years, “Wistful” presents itself as a more focus expression to me.

Flo: In general: How do you write songs? Is there a specific kind of process? Or are there different things that come to your mind if something or someone inspires you?

Sylvaine: I would say each time is pretty much different and that there are absolutely no rules when it comes to making music. That being said, I do of course have a few habits that seem to reoccur during my compositional processes.
I always try to write in a purely emotional way, not over-thinking things too much, but just doing and making choices intuitively. The only important thing to me is that the music expresses something real, something I think is most easily achieved by just letting your mind flow and work with whatever comes out at the time, be it something inspired by introvert issues, something visual, a person, a situation or something else. It all happens in a very natural way basically, where the process of writing is very spontaneous and I continue until I have what I consider to be an album. Usually, I’ll write more tracks than what end up on the albums, but I think this is necessary to ensure that only the best ones make the cut. I’m always writing music, even though my inspiration level goes up and down like for any other artist, so in that sense you could say I’m not really intending to write for a specific album, but rather just keeping the flow going as long as it last. As for the instrumentation, I tend to start making songs based on guitar riffs these days and then build all the other instruments around that.

Flo: What is your favourite song of SYLVAINE and why?

Sylvaine: It’s quite hard to pick a favorite to be honest, as they’re all my babies in each their way and all have very personal meanings to me. Some of the songs though, emit this very special feeling while I play them. Like each time is some kind of cathartic and comforting experience. It’s quite strange, but I suppose this means these songs lay very close to my heart. From my first album, the title track “Silent Chamber, Noisy Heart” is one of those songs. On “Wistful”, the tracks “Delusions”, “Earthbound” and “Wistful” are like that, too. The title track of “Wistful really embodies one of the main reasons of why I created Sylvaine to begin with, making it a song that I’ll always feel a special connection to. Every time I listen to this track, it takes me back to those moments when I first created it. I think it will always make me feel something profound.

Flo: What is your biggest source of inspiration for your texts and for your instrumentals?

Sylvaine live 2

Sylvaine: SYLVAINE functions as an “audio diary” for me, like for many other artists, so the subjects that come out thru the music are usually conflicts or subjects residing within me, that I need to express in some way. Writing music functions as a sort of therapy for me, letting me get all of my emotions out instead of keeping them bottled up inside, allowing me to process them in a way. Making music about all of this is only a temporary relief I think, not offering a final or complete solution to my issues, yet it’s something I really need in my life. I have been speaking a lot about the feeling of profound longing for something, without knowing what or being able to reach it and the feeling of being lost and not finding your way back to shelter. “Wistful” also speaks a lot about being trapped in this existence, inside a human vessel, which is restricted by its senses, leaving one unable to go back home in a spiritual sense. Other than this, I tend to be inspired by the duality in life: happiness vs. melancholy, the outside world vs. my inner world, nature vs. urbanity, technology vs. spirituality, reality vs. daydreams and so on.

Flo: If music inspires you, what are the three most inspiring bands/musicians for you?

Sylvaine: Like anyone deeply passionate about music, I think music does indeed inspire me a lot for my own art. It’s such a powerful art form, with an ability to affect our mind in so many ways. It’s a necessity in our human lives. To choose only 3 bands that have inspired my own music thru the years is quite tough! If I had to choose, maybe I’d go for TYPE O NEGATIVE, PHILIP GLASS and DEAD CAN DANCE. Perhaps another day I would give you a different answer, but I feel these three would be the right choice today.

Flo: What other music genre(s) do you like to listen to?

Sylvaine: I pretty much listen to anything that speaks to me somehow, so I like a lot of different genres. I adore the whole shoegaze/dreampop scene, as well as the darkwave scene, the post-punk scene, and the more modern post-rock and post-metal scenes, with band such as SLOWDIVE, THE CHAMELEONS, EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY, SIGUR ROS, ALCEST, JOY DIVISION, MONO, HAMMOCK, COCKTEAU TWINS, LYCIA, DEAD CAN DANCE and THE CURE being some of my favorites. I also draw inspiration from classical music, with minimalism being one of my favorite directions. I was always very fascinated by the concept of taking the smallest pieces and evolving them slowly over time into something else. This is something I try to do in my music as well, to really create those hypnotic, meditative patterns that lull the listeners into some sort of trance. As for more metal influences, one of my favorite bands is TYPE O NEGATIVE. I love the different expressions they convey in their songs and just admire their ability to create lush, layered, heavy atmospheres. As for black metal, I like a lot of the bands from this scene too, like ULVER, BATHORY, EMPEROR, DARKTHRONE, BURZUM and so on. Also love the whole grunge scene of the 90s, with NIRVANA and the SMASHING PUMPKINS being the obvious favorites.

Flo: When did you decide to become a musician and to write own songs, and why?

Sylvaine: Music has always been a big part of me since I was a child. Seeing as my parents were both musicians and working in the music business, I was introduced to this life from the very beginning. Making and playing music is absolutely a cathartic process for me, as mentioned before, and became a sort of therapy that I couldn’t live without from my early teenage years and onward. Already from the time I was 16 years old, I was fascinated by the balance between beautiful and harsh/heavy in certain kinds of music and started to write music related to that myself, which ultimately lead me to choose the sound I did for SYLVAINE many years later. I need music in my life to be more or less complete, to be able to deal with things inside of me that otherwise tend to get suppressed. That is why I started making music, and I feel so happy and thankful that I am able to do so. I always knew I would follow this path if destiny allowed me to.

Flo: You passed your very first live gig with band at the DARK BOMBASTIC EVENING this year. How did it work? What would you like to tell us about this gig?

Sylvaine: Our very first show with the full live line-up of Sylvaine was really an amazing experience! We had been waiting for this moment for quite some time already, so finally being on stage, seeing all the beautiful people moving to our music and giving us such positive feedback, was more than we could have ever asked for. People were coming up to us after our show to tell us they couldn’t believe that this was our first show and that we were their positive surprise of the festival. It was so nice! We truly enjoyed ourselves a lot at the DARK BOMBASTIC EVENING, thanks to the great people working at the festival, the kind audience, the other bands and also the picturesque location. These memories will be kept with us for many years to come and we just can’t wait to get back out there and play for more audiences in other places very soon!

Flo: What makes you more delighted and satisfied: Listening to a new song of yours for the very first time or playing a live gig?

Sylvaine: Both situations leave you with a great feeling of being delighted and satisfied if you ask me, but I’m not sure you can choose between the two though, as they can’t really be compared. The whole song writing process is so introvert and operates more on a personal level, while the live experience is extrovert, spontaneous and shared with many people. They are both very rewarding, but in completely different ways.

Flo: Neige plays the drums for you, this is awesome! For me he is one of the greatest musicians ever. I love all his music projects. How did you get in contact with him and how did he become your drummer?

Sylvaine - Neige

Sylvaine: I first discovered ALCEST in 2011/2012 and immediately fell in love and connected to their music. In 2012 I had the pleasure of seeing them play live a couple of times and I ended up meeting them one night. After that, I stayed in touch with Neige, we became friends and I started to show him things I was doing with SYLVAINE. He was very positive to the music and basically became a supporter of the project. This eventually led to the acoustic tour I did with them in South America in September 2014, and after that, Neige playing drums on “Wistful” and in the live line-up of SYLVAINE. I really like his style of drumming, his attentiveness as a drummer and his strong sense of musicality, so we both felt it could fit really well with what I do in my music. We basically tried to play thru the songs together one day and after both agreed it sounded amazing! I know Neige was in the mood for getting back into playing drums again too, so it was a golden opportunity for me to take advantage of that, haha. It has been a huge pleasure to work with such a talented and creative musician for “Wistful” and our show at the DARK BOMBASTIC EVENING, and I really look forward to possible further collaborations with him in the future. It has been a dream come true!

Flo: What can we expect from SYLVAINE in the next future?

Sylvaine: As my album has been out for some time now and my press commitments are slowly calming down, I am taking this calmer time to focus on the live side of the project and to write my third album. I still don’t know exactly what direction I’m heading in for the character of it, but I feel it will be strongly related to “Wistful”, yet with some new elements and a further development in my sound. I have enough songs for the album already and tons of other ideas to develop, but I’m taking my time to make as many songs as possible, to really make sure only the best/right ones make it on to the third record. We are also trying to book tours/shows for the band, as we would love to come and play for all of you out there. I’m constantly working on something related to SYLVAINE, to keep the ball rolling. I didn’t really stop working since 2013, before the release of my first album. I really don’t mind though, as I am super happy and thankful to be able to work solely for my band.

Flo: Can you tell us something about some plans for playing in Germany?

Sylvaine: As of now, there are no precise plans for playing in Germany, but we already had a few offers from German promoters, so I really hope it will happen soon. Ever since I started doing music as a teenager, I always wanted to play for the German audience, as I knew it was a big market with an open-minded crowd. I cross my fingers and look forward to the day I can return to the country and make those teenage dreams come true!

Flo: If you had to choose: vocals or guitar? Why?

Sylvaine: Once again, tough choice! Singing is something I have been doing since I was a little kid and has been a way to express myself that came quite natural to me. I always felt like that was “my instrument”, as it’s the only instrument I ever had a little bit of self-confidence in. The guitar however, is a more “fresh” instrument to me as I only played it for about 3 years now. It’s a crucial one for me, as it’s the instrument that ultimately allows me to create my music. I used to write my songs on piano, but when I started to play guitar, it opened a new dimension compositional wise. So yes, I guess choosing between the two is just too hard, haha. Sorry!

Flo: You have the last words: What would you like to tell the world outside there?

Sylvaine: First of all I would like to thank you ever so much for this interview, Flo. It was my pleasure, really! I hope the readers of SILENCE MAGAZIN will enjoy this little insight into the SYLVAINE realm and I can’t wait to see you all face to face when we hit the road next year! Have a great rest of your summer, stay creative and see you soon.

Flo: Thank you very very much for your time, your complex answers and your openness, SYLVAINE! It really was a big delight for me and I’m really looking forward to seeing you on stage here in Germany!
